Where to eat in and around Golf del Sur

The area has cafés on the promenade, restaurants at the marina and some truly local places up in the hills. And there's a fully equipped kitchen in the apartment if you feel like cooking for yourselves.

Within walking distance

There's an Italian restaurant right in the complex: handy on the day you arrive, when you don't feel like going anywhere. Along the Golf del Sur promenade you'll find several cafés and bars serving breakfast, coffee, pizza and simple dinners with ocean views. The bakery has fresh local bread every morning.

Marina San Miguel

Ten minutes on foot or three by car. There are several seafood restaurants by the moorings, and in the evening it's calm and lovely. A good place to try the local fish and watch the yachts.

Los Abrigos

A fishing village 2.5 kilometres away, about five minutes by car. This is where the locals themselves come for fish. Restaurants line the seafront one after another, and you choose your fish by weight straight from the display. It's best to book a table at weekends in the evening.

Guachinches

If you'd like to taste Tenerife without the tourist gloss, head to a guachinche. These are family-run places attached to small wineries: two or three dishes on the menu, house wine by the jug, paper tablecloths. Most are higher up in the hills and in the north of the island, with the nearest about half an hour's drive away. Bring cash: not everywhere takes cards.

A taste of Canarian cuisine

  • Papas arrugadas Small potatoes boiled in very salty water, served with mojo sauces: a spicy red one and a green one made with coriander.
  • Vieja The local parrotfish, usually grilled whole.
  • Queso asado Grilled goat's cheese, often with palm honey.
  • Potaje A thick vegetable soup, especially good in winter.
  • Bienmesabe An almond dessert, very sweet.
  • Barraquito A layered coffee with condensed milk and lemon zest.

Groceries

Spar and HiperDino are within walking distance, and in Las Chafiras there are Mercadona and Lidl with lower prices. On Sundays many shops are closed or open only in the morning, so plan ahead. On Saturdays the neighbouring towns often hold farmers' markets: fruit, cheese, honey and wine.

If you're arriving late, one of our two ready-made grocery sets, at a fixed price, can be waiting in the kitchen for you. Order it in advance and there's no need to go anywhere on your first evening.

What is a guachinche?
A homely little eatery attached to a wine-growing smallholding, and a Tenerife tradition. A simple menu, local wine and low prices. Most guachinches are up in the hills and in the north of the island.
What should I be sure to try?
Papas arrugadas with mojo sauces, fresh vieja, grilled goat's cheese, potaje soup and bienmesabe for dessert. To drink: local Tenerife wine and a barraquito coffee.
Is there somewhere nearby to buy groceries?
Yes, there are Spar and HiperDino supermarkets within walking distance. The larger Mercadona and Lidl are in Las Chafiras, ten minutes away by car.
Is eating out expensive?
Lunch in a local café is usually 12–18 € per person, and dinner at a seafront restaurant will come to 25–40 €. The weekday menú del día is the best value of all.
