Beaches near Golf del Sur

South Tenerife has it all: black volcanic sand, wide pale beaches and natural pools in the rocks. Everything here is within half an hour of the apartment.

On foot from the apartment

The promenade is about ten minutes' walk away: a level path above the ocean, ideal for a morning stroll, a run or a pushchair. The nearest sandy beach is about 500 metres away, and San Blas is a kilometre and a half. For swimming, most guests choose the complex's pool, which is heated from October to April.

Playa La Tejita, about 15 minutes

The widest natural beach in the south: more than a kilometre of pale sand beneath the red cone of Montaña Roja. It is far quieter than the resort areas, with a beach bar and a car park. It can get very windy, and on those days we'd suggest staying by the pool.

El Médano, 15 minutes

A laid-back town of surfers and kitesurfers, and one of the world's great centres for both sports. Several beaches in a row, a seafront lined with cafés and surf schools for beginners. It's worth a visit even if you don't plan to go in the water: watching the kites over the ocean is a pleasure in itself.

Las Américas and Los Cristianos, 20 minutes

Resort beaches with a gentle slope into the water, sun loungers, lifeguards and every facility. Playa del Duque, Playa de Fañabé, Playa de Las Vistas: pale sand and calm water. This is also where the whale-watching boats and the ferries to La Gomera leave from.

Natural rock pools

Along the island's coast there are stone basins that the ocean fills through the rocks. The nearest worth seeing are in Los Abrigos (about 5 minutes by car, 2.5 km) and up north in Garachico (1 hour 20 minutes). Only swim in them in calm weather and at low tide: when the waves are up, they are dangerous.

Good to know

  • Black sand gets much hotter than pale sand, so beach shoes come in handy.
  • At the latitude of the Canaries the sun is strong all year round: you'll need sun cream even in January.
  • The ocean has currents: keep an eye on the flags and put safety first.
Is there a beach in Golf del Sur itself?
The area has a small beach of dark volcanic sand and a promenade along the ocean. There are no large sandy beaches within walking distance: for those, people head to El Médano or Las Américas.
What is the water temperature?
Around 22–23 °C in summer and 19–20 °C in winter. The ocean here is cooler than the Mediterranean. The complex has a pool that is heated from October to April.
Where is the gentlest way into the water?
At Playa La Tejita and on the beaches of Las Américas. El Médano is often windy, which is exactly what makes it so good for surfing and kitesurfing.
Are there beaches with golden sand?
Yes. Playa La Tejita and the beaches in Las Américas are light-coloured, and some of the sand has been brought in. Closer to home, the beaches are dark and volcanic.
